I love holiday movies. Any holiday movie really, (somebody give me an Arbor Day flick! Please!) but Christmas movies in particular hold a special place in my heart. I love the sappy and sweet ones. I love the irreverent and cruel ones. I love the what-the-elfshelf-did-I-just-watch ones.
But certain Christmas films have become overexposed, overplayed, and over commercialized. It’s a Wonderful Life, A Christmas Story, Love Actually, Christmas Vacation, Elf, Die Hard, Black Christmas, even Silent Night, Deadly Night… they’re more than movies, they’re merchandising empires cranking out shirts and hats and ornaments and action figures and board games and… to quote Lucy Van Pelt, “Christmas is a big commercial racket.”
But outside of these ubiquitous choices, there are tons of holiday films that aren’t overexposed and need your love, so I set out to create a list of 24 nights of under-loved holiday films to fill your December with Christmas Magic.
But how does one structure a month-long list? By using a tactic my partner and I have been implementing since the dark days of lockdown. In order to prevent the scrolling paralysis that occurs when trying to pick a movie in a sea of choices, we now make weekly grids with different film genre for each day of the week. Like Sunday – Documentaries, Monday – Noir, Tuesday – Sci-Fi, etc.
The grid adds a structured variety to our film watching and allows us to each pick a film in that day’s specific style to create impromptu double-features. (Yes, we try to watch 2 movies a night). We change the grid each month to keep it fresh. Our December mandate is only Christmas movies, so the December sub-genres are:
- Sunday – Comedy
- Monday – Romance
- Tuesday – Horror
- Wednesday – WTF?
- Thursday – Crime/Action
- Friday – Family
- Saturday – Foreign Language
The resulting list looks like this:
This 24-film list follows the above grid and is curated to hopefully provide maximum variety. Some of the films are more popular than others, but rest assured, there are plenty of odd, weirdo, and unknown films on this list.
And let me also assure you that NONE of these choices is a joke; you’ll find no Santa Claus Conquers the Martians here. All of these films are chosen because they satisfy a certain aspect of my holiday needs.
I hope you enjoy these films as much as I do!
