How to Have Sex
"How to Have Sex" is a wild journey through the teenage quest for experiences in Malia. Molly Manning Walker's debut film is an energetic rollercoaster, brilliantly capturing the uncertainties and pressures of youth in a party setting. Mia McKenna-Bruce shines as Tara, navigating the complexities of sexual exploration with subtlety and depth. Supported by Lara Peake and Enva Lewis as Tara's friends, the trio embarks on a liberating holiday filled with laugh-out-loud moments and poignant reflections on consent and identity. Set against the backdrop of Malia's neon-drenched chaos, the film follows Tara's pursuit of losing her virginity amid peer expectations and self-discovery. Shaun Thomas brings comedic charm as Badger, while Samuel Bottomley adds layers to Paddy's macho exterior. Manning Walker skillfully balances humor with sincerity, tackling themes of consent and friendship with nuance. "How to Have Sex" delivers a candid portrayal of teenage dynamics, showcasing the intricacies of evolving relationships amidst summer revelry. With its mix of wit, heart, and genuine performances, this film is a refreshing take on adolescent experiences that lingers long after the credits roll. The Promised Land

The Promised Land

The Promised Land
"The Promised Land" is a historical epic that takes us on a journey to 18th century Denmark, where Mads Mikkelsen's rugged and determined character, Ludvig Kahlen, sets out to tame the unforgiving heath of Jutland. With lofty ambitions of acquiring wealth and a royal title, Kahlen faces a multitude of obstacles including climate issues, illness, money troubles, and the bratty nobleman Frederik de Schinkel. While the film showcases Mikkelsen's captivating performance and explores themes of tenacity and class struggle, it unfortunately suffers from being overlong and repetitive. It conveys its ideas effectively through story beats but then insists on stating them two more times in case viewers missed the first round. The movie does have its moments of levity amidst the gloom, such as when Schinkel insists on adding "de" before his name to sound more important. However, these moments are not enough to lift the weighty grandiosity that plagues this sweeping period drama. The performances by Amanda Collin as Ludvig's housekeeper Ann Barbara and Kristine Kujath Thorp as Edel provide some relief from the macho posturing that dominates much of the film. They bring depth to their characters who navigate their own struggles against abuse and societal expectations. Director Nikolaj Arcel complements the narrative with visually striking tableaus that contrast the desolation of Jutland with Schinkel's opulent manor. The cinematography by Rasmus Videbæk adds weight to this rugged landscape while Dan Romer's orchestral score fuels an epic sweep. "The Promised Land" is a solid showcase for Mads Mikkelsen's talents but falls short in delivering an engaging cinematic experience due to its excessive length and repetitiveness. It may not be able to fully tame the heath it sets out conquer, but it certainly gives it a valiant effort.

Suncoast
"Suncoast" is a heartfelt film that tackles the themes of grief, family dynamics, and coming-of-age with a mix of predictability and genuine emotion. While it may check all the boxes of a typical Sundance movie, it manages to rise above its formulaic structure thanks to its authentic core and strong performances. Laura Chinn's directorial debut draws from her own personal experience of losing her brother to cancer as a teenager. This adds a layer of rawness and sensitivity to the film that shines through even in its more clumsy moments. The film's soundtrack, composed by Este Haim and Christopher Stracey, enhances these poignant moments. The casting in "Suncoast" is one of its strong points, particularly Nico Parker in the role of Doris and Laura Linney as Kristine. Parker brings tenderness and internal conflict to Doris' character, while Linney goes full-on Shirley MacLaine in her portrayal of Kristine's emotionally exhausted mother. However, despite these merits, "Suncoast" does suffer from some shortcomings. Its plot mechanics can feel schematic at times, attempting to cover too many bases without offering any surprises along the way. The character played by Woody Harrelson adds an element of magical outsider that feels contrived rather than organic. The film also struggles with balancing tone and genre elements. While there are moments of humor brought by Doris' new friends and their cluelessly patronizing comments about her neighborhood, this aspect belongs more in a different kind of teen movie than what "Suncoast" aims for. One thing is certain though: Laura Linney elevates the film with her refusal to soften Kristine's harsh edges. Her performance injects rage, pain, denial into every scene she appears in—making us both sympathize with her character while understanding how she has made Doris feel invisible within their family dynamic. Ultimately," Suncoast" treads familiar territory and relies heavily on textbook manipulation to elicit tears and catharsis. It may not be groundbreaking, but it does have its moments of genuine emotion and offers a glimpse into the director's personal experience. So grab some tissues, settle in for a streaming session on Hulu, and prepare for an emotional journey that will remind you why family is both complicated and precious.

Fitting In

Fitting In

Fitting In
Film Review: Fitting In Get ready to be emotionally raw and entertained in Molly McGlynn's semi-autobiographical film, Fitting In. This coming-of-age story follows Lindy (played by Maddie Ziegler), a 16-year-old track runner who discovers she has a rare reproductive condition. With witty wordplay and nuanced storytelling, McGlynn explores the complexities of burgeoning womanhood, intersex identity, and messy sexuality that defies rigid labels. Lindy's journey begins when she realizes she doesn't have a typical vaginal canal and is diagnosed with MRKH syndrome. Unable to have periods or get pregnant naturally, Lindy navigates her own unique struggles while trying to maintain relationships with her boyfriend Adam (D'Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai) and best friend Viv (Djouliet Amara). As Lindy grapples with questions about her identity—whether she's any less of a woman without a uterus or if embracing an intersex/non-binary identity is the answer—the film delves into the messy realities of self-acceptance. What sets Fitting In apart is its refusal to make universal statements about identity. Instead, it focuses on Lindy's personal journey and how each individual crafts their own sense of self. The film challenges societal notions of womanhood by showcasing various experiences within Lindy's circle. From Rita (Emily Hampshire), Lindy’s single mom who survived breast cancer but might face judgment for being uncoupled; to Jax (Ki Griffin), an effortlessly confident acquaintance exploring an androgynous identity—Fitting In interrogates what it truly means to be a woman. However, where the film stumbles slightly is in its attempt at comedy. While Molly McGlynn’s direction remains competent throughout—perhaps influenced by her background as a television director—the comedic moments often fall flat due to their soft delivery. The first act struggles to establish a consistent tone, only finding its footing once the weightier questions about Lindy's identity emerge. Nonetheless, Fitting In's strength lies in its personal nature. Maddie Ziegler delivers a fantastic performance, immersing us in Lindy's confusion and unvoiced emotions. McGlynn's own experiences with MRKH syndrome lend authenticity to the film, drawing audiences into an unconventional adolescence that resonates with those who have complex relationships with their gender and sexuality. Ultimately, Fitting In reminds us that labels are not what truly matter. The film's core message is about self-acceptance and loving oneself for who they are or aspire to be—an elusively simple yet powerful idea. So grab your friends and head to the theaters on February 2nd for a journey through identity that will make you laugh, cry, and ultimately embrace your own uniqueness. Overall Rating: Hilariously heartfelt exploration of identity - 4/5 stars

Scrambled

Scrambled

Scrambled
"Scrambled" is a hilarious and relatable coming-of-age fertility saga that will have you laughing, cringing, and texting your exes simultaneously. Lena Dunham had "Girls," Amy Schumer had "Trainwreck," and now Leah McKendrick has given us this gem of a film that shines in its depiction of the pressures of motherhood, weddings, and baby showers. The story revolves around Nellie, played brilliantly by McKendrick herself, a 34-year-old aimless woman who decides to freeze her eggs amidst the frenzy of her friends settling down. As she navigates the world of fertility treatments and awkward encounters with ex-boyfriends (hello prom king ex), Nellie's journey takes us on an emotional rollercoaster filled with miscarriages, reproductive therapy groups, and even mentions of past abortions – all wrapped up in darkly comedic moments that hit close to home. With quick quips, impeccable timing, and tight pacing reminiscent of modern TV shows (a compliment indeed), "Scrambled" delivers the kind of pay-off usually reserved for cult favorite TV series. When Nellie writes a letter to her frozen eggs as their proud mom-to-be self – it's both hilarious and heartwarming. Leah McKendrick not only shines on-screen but also behind the scenes as one of IndieWire's top female filmmakers to watch this year. And it seems Hollywood has finally caught up with her talents as she also tackles high concept IP projects like writing for the upcoming "I Know What You Did Last Summer" film directed by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson (of "Someone Great" fame) while penning the script for the "Grease" prequel titled "Summer Lovin'." So be warned: watching "Scrambled" may lead you down memory lane texting your former flames or Hinge hookups with a casual “hey stranger.” But fear not! By the end, you'll be reminded that your best self is still out there, dancing to your own beat. Here's to embracing life's uncertainties and finding humor in the scramble. "Scrambled" premiered at the 2023 SXSW Film Festival and serves as a delightful toast to McKendrick's talent and the messy yet hilarious realities of womanhood.
